Cheque presentation to ppis

Through Rhythms and Colours of the Indus on 5 May 2012, SPA raised over SGD70,000 for Persatuan Pemudi Islam Singapura, PPIS (Singapore Muslim Women’s Association). PPIS runs a range of social service programmes to educate and nurture women and empower Malay or Muslim families. These programmes include services for the homeless, young couples, step families and youth-at-risk, with a special focus on those from the lower income groups.
On 21 Dec 2012, SPA visited a kindergarten run by PPIS to present the donation to the organization. More than 70 children, youth, volunteers and teachers welcomed SPA with exciting performances of song and dance. The children also presented SPA with creative art pieces. It was a wonderful evening where SPA Committee Members got the chance to interact with the wonderful staff, volunteers and children of PPIS, through song, dance and laughter.

Spa cricket carnival

The SPA Cricket Carnival held on Dec 01, 2012 at “The Cage”, in conjunction with the SPA Cricket Club (SPA CC), was a great event. Unfortunately, time constraint meant that there were no mixed-teams this time round. For all the enthusiasts that either were away traveling, or tried to put together mixed teams, do not despair, you have sufficient notice to do this now. Following up on the positive feedback from the participants, as well as excited SPA members, the next Cricket Carnival is being slated for the first quarter of 2013. So, get your cricketing gear out, recruit your teams, and get started on training! Look out for details soon.

Here is an account by Hasan Farooq, SPA Cricket Club Executive Committee.

“More than 60 Pakistani cricket enthusiasts came together in over 8 teams to participate in this exciting event. It was encouraging to see a range of participants from below the age of 15 years to above 40 years. The effort that went into ensuring the tournament was well organized and the matches were played as per schedule, made it enjoyable for all.

The games played were fast-paced and highly competitive, keeping everyone on their toes and thoroughly entertained. Most matches had nail-biting finishes with the winning runs being scored off the very last delivery in some. Many excited participants stayed on to watch the knock-out phase long after their own matches had been played and decided, adding to the sporting spirit of the day.

The biggest excitement however was reserved for the FINAL game. With 7 runs required to win, and one ball remaining – to everyone’s delight – a fabulous SIX-run was hit, bringing Miandad’s iconic last-ball SIX in Sharjah in 1986 back to mind. The final was then decided in the super-over where the team “We Back the Pak” beat “Wheshi Gujjars” with some aggressive hitting and very tight bowling. The tournament was followed by a prize distribution ceremony, whereby the winning and runners-up teams were presented with trophies, Gold and Silver medals respectively.

Participating teams thoroughly enjoyed the event, and showed strong enthusiasm to participate in similar events in the future. The event provided an excellent opportunity for the Pakistani community to come together. SPA CC, in collaboration with SPA, intends to hold similar events at regular intervals during the year, with the next one slated for the first quarter of 2013.”
