About me:

Sophie Shaikh moved to Singapore from Chicago in June 1988 with her husband and five children, 3 boys and 2 girls. All finished schooling at the Singapore American school and are now all living in the USA. Four of them are now married and Sophie has 11 beautiful grandchildren to her name. “I was very involved with the school PTA, volunteering with the events, scholarships, and the curriculum committee”, Sophie remarks. A teacher by profession, she finished her BSE and BEd at the College of Home Economics in Karachi and then went on to complete her Ami Montessori Diploma in Karachi. Always a humanitarian, she taught at the blind, deaf, and dumb school in Karachi and sat four exams for them. “I Joined SPA in 1990 and became assistant secretary and then a committee member. I gave my full effort to SPA in pursuit of keeping the community together and keeping the Pakistan flag flying high”. Busy with full time charity work by teaching children whom she loved, Sophie got involved with the Mohamadiyha home and Jamiyah Children’s home teaching and counseling children.

 

In 1997 Sophie joined Pertapis Children’s Home for abused and neglected children, teaching and taking care of their emotional and physical needs. “I took the female centre under my wing and made managed to gain SPA’s support to accept Pertapis as their regular bursary, whilst doing a lot of fund raising for Singapore and Pakistan at the same time”. Started an education fund for Pakistani students at the NUS and was very much a part of AWA which she joined in 1988 to play tennis which she loves. Sophie became involved with teaching cooking different cuisines and also heading the Philanthropic Club for many years holding charity ball and events and channeled a lot of their funds into the needful homes. To this day she is still bringing lots of culture, art, and fashion from Pakistan to show Singaporeans and teaching different cuisines to raise funds for the educational needs of the children and back home.

About me:

Farhan Waheed, a seasoned banker with extensive experience in various regions around the world, made his move to Singapore in 2017. Driven by his passion for community development, he eagerly became a part of the Singapore Pakistani Association (SPA). Initially serving as the Treasurer, Farhan’s strong desire to create meaningful change propelled him to take on the esteemed role of Vice President within the organization. As Vice President, he plays a pivotal role in advancing the association’s mission of promoting unity, cultural exchange, and support for the Pakistani community residing in Singapore. By spearheading strategic planning initiatives, organizing impactful events, and nurturing relationships within Singapore and beyond, Farhan effectively leads SPA to fulfill its goals.

 

Embodying the principles of the association, Farhan ensures that SPA remains a source of strength and support for its members. His remarkable journey, spanning from his early years in Pakistan to his ventures in the Middle East and now in Singapore, serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment, adaptability, and determination to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

About me:

Saad Haroon is the Vice President of the Singapore Pakistani Association. Prior to this, he held the honorary role of Treasurer. His “day job” is Head of Marketing for Syngenta in Asia Pacific. Previously he was Head of Asia Group and oversaw Syngenta’s business across Bangladesh, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Pakistan, Philippines, and the Frontier Markets of Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.

 

Saad moved to Singapore with his family in 2004 with his current company and has held various roles across the Asia Pacific as well as at a global level. In 2008 he and his family moved to China and in 2011 to Switzerland with the same company. They returned to Singapore in 2014 and have been here ever since. Prior to 2004, Saad spent almost 7 years with ICI Pakistan Ltd in sales and marketing roles. He has an MBA from INSEAD and lives with his family in Singapore.

About me:
Kinza Qazi moved to Singapore a few years back from Lahore. She has three children all studying in Singapore. She is the “Vice president” and the “Cultural Celebration Lead” for the PTA (Parents Teacher Association) in Canadian International School, Singapore.
 
 
She holds an M.Phil degree in Environmental Science and Policy and Masters degree in Geophysics. She has always actively worked as a  social worker and a philanthropist with motivation as a scholar to pursue socio-environmental policy across the globe.
Coming from Quetta Balochistan, she has been passionate about environmental sustainability and the social welfare of the people. Living in Swat she has supported poverty elevation, literacy, polio eradication, and the environment. She has been an active member of WWF, NWFP wildlife department and established Baharia University Environmental Protection Society, and was its first President. Living in Jakarta, Indonesia she supported orphanages by patronizing them through the international community. She is on the board of advisors, an active member, and an art teacher for polio affected children of the “VOICE Society for the Rehabilitation of special persons” in Lahore for many years. She supported VOICE in establishing the infrastructure of the welfare home and raising funds for various causes for the Polio affected children. Kinza enjoys her time, integrating with different communities in Singapore. She loves the Philanthropy work lead by SPA Society.

About me:

A second generation Pakistani in Dubai, Umair did his undergraduate studies in the US and worked extensively in the UK and the Middle East, before moving to Singapore in 2019…where he is often asked, where are you from?

 

Umair has always been passionate about championing causes that support underprivileged Pakistani students. He helped organise poetry and musical events with Taleem at the Pakistan High Commission in London, for The Citizens Foundation, whilst also being a founding member of CVBoosters, a not-for-profit organisation that helped British Pakistani students with career advice and development of work-enhancement skills.

 

He has been an advisor to Board Members of the Pakistan Education Academy, Dubai, one of the largest not for Profit, non-government affiliated Schools outside Pakistan, with an enrolment of over 2,500 students.

 

He spent most of his career as a Financial Services Management Consultant with Deloitte and KPMG before moving to Microsoft and subsequently joining Mastercard. An avid squash player, Umair enjoys spending time with his family and two young kids, exploring the different parks in Singapore.

 

As Treasurer of SPA, he is committed to working with his fellow Executive Committee Members to organise meaningful forums and events that engage and delight the different generations of Pakistanis living in Singapore, whilst strengthening the community bond.

 

Coming back to the question of where are you from? I am from Pakistan lah!
