“The SPA’s roots go as far back as 1947 with the first Pakistani immigrants commemorating events such as Pakistan day. Through the years the organisation grew and was later named Singapore Pakistani Association. Since then, the group has been in operation on the strength of its member’s voluntary spirit. Today, members include Singaporeans, permanent residents, expatriates, short-term visitors and Pakistani students. Mostly, the SPA activities have focussed on events which reflect its Pakistani background and heritage, as well as contribute to the communities of Singapore. A range of profile events have been hosted over the years and the Bazaar & Festival 2007 is the latest and most likely the most public event held by the SPA. Always a percentage of profits from each event are donated to various registered charities in Singapore and overseas. The SPA will continue to support the less fortunate both in Singapore and Pakistan by contributing to civic and charitable causes.
The Association serves to provide a cohesive platform through which Singaporean Pakistani’s may have a common association through which to meet people, foster friendships, identify business potential and create synergies for mutual growth within the wider communities of Singapore. Though compromising mainly of Pakistani origin members, the association is open to any nationality and provides associate membership options.
The event was addressed by H.E. Mr Sajjad Ashraf, High Commissioner of Pakistan and Dr Muhammed Faishal Ibrahim, Member of Parliament, Marine Parade GRC. The event was attended by further dignitaries, namely H.E. Dr M Amin Kurdi, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia; Mr Burc Celan, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Republic of Turkey; Mr. Mohammed Zaazou, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt; Dr Israr Husain, Deputy Head of Mission, Pakistan High Commission. In addition the event was also attended by a number of VIP’s of senior positions from various organisations in Singapore.
The event was held as the inaugural annual event celebrating the SPA and the community. The event was held so as to give primarily the membership it’s own holistic event for a gathering and fun day together. The event was targeted to attract not only SPA members but members of all communities in Singapore . The aim was to allow other communities of Singapore to taste and feel the culture and lifestyle of Pakistan, and it’s people. Through this, the SPA hopes to reach out to the other Singaporean communities and create a greater awareness of SPA in the Singaporean Communities.
Initial expectations of attendance were pegged at around 1,500 people. The initial feeling is that the event attracted over 2,000 people and hence is seen as a good success. There were a number of tastes targeted. The bazaar served to provide a shopping treat to many. There were fun and games for children including inflatable castles, games, balloon and candy floss. The committee was particularly pleased to see the many Indian and Sikh community attendees at the event. Lately the SPA sub-committee worked diligently with members of the Indian community to create awareness of the event and help to create a multi-racial aspect to the event.
With the huge success seen from the event, and the continuing words of encouragement received from the many members of the SPA it is hoped to be holding a future event in 2008 most likely around August time”.
